    William M. Patterson, a flourishing merchant and farmer of Unitia, is,like
    many other citizens of Texas, a native of Tennessee, having been born in
    Marshall county, that State, May 18, 1849. His father, George W.Patterson,
    was reared in Marshall county, where he began life as a farmer, in whichhe
    was a model. He removed to Texas in the spring of 1860, and settled in
    Lamar county. In 1869 he removed to Delta county, and now resides at Ben
    Franklin. Mr. Patterson is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church
    South, and is a consistent Christian. He is also a member of the Farmer's
    Alliance, and labors with his fellow-farmers for the advancement of the
    interests of the agricultural community. During the war Mr. Patterson
    raised a company of men at Paris, Texas, with whom he joined General
    Whitfield's regiment. He represented Delta county in the Fourteenth and
    Twentieth legislatures of Texas. Mr. Patterson was married to Miss JaneL.
    Hardison, duaghter of Humphrey Hardison, of Maury county Tennessee. They
    became the parents of ten children. Those living are as follows_ JamesH.,
    William M., John C., Harriet O, Eliza M., Salina V., Sophronia and Sherrod
    D. Two others, Margaret and Thomas F., died in infancy.
    William M. Patterson began life at farming in Lamar county, in thatportion
    which is now a part of Delta county. He came to Texas with his parents in
    1860, and has ever since made this his home. He is a member of the
    Methodist Episcopal church south, and of the Knights of Honor. Believingin
    co-operation and combination to promote a common interest, he is a memberof
    the Farmers' Alliance and of the Grange. He is a very charitable man, and
    no one deserving of help is turned from his door empty-handed.
    Mr. Patterson was married February 28, 1878 to Miss Bettie Redus, daughter
    of Wesley Redus, who was a native of Oktibbeha county, Mississippi. Three
    sprightly children, now living have been born to bless this union,
    namely--Elmer G. W., Alva H and Walter E.
    Mr. Patterson is now doing a fine mercantile business at Unitia, and isalso
    directing the carrying on of his farm. He is now the owner of 111 acresof
    land, the soil being of the dark kind, which makes Texas one of theforemost
    States of the Union for agricultural purposes. He is not only prosperousin
    business, but, by the uprightness of his life, and his generous and
    charitable disposition, has won the respect and affection of all who know
