In the summer of 1699, more than five hundred Huguenots who had escaped from
France to England, left South Hampton, England, for Virginia, where the King
had giving them a grant of 10,000 acres of land. They safely reached the
shores of Virginia, where they were heartily welcomed. Among the emigres was
the Witt family.
In the will of William Witt, probated on June 13, 1754, at Albemarle County
Virginia, he mentions his sons Benjamin and John and daughter; and his
daughter Sarah Canidey, wife of John Canidey and Agnes Key.
