The Mason Family in Lamar County, Alabama

The Mason Family

Edmond Mason is reported to have been born in Virginia about 1790.  He moved to Tennessee where he married Rebecca Elizabeth Woods on December 25, 1819.  He enlisted as a private in the War of 1812 at Knoxville, Tennessee, serving from October 6, 1814 to May 1, 1815 in Captain Daniel Price's Company of the Tennessee Militia.

Edmond and family are listed on the 1820 census of Rutherford County, Tennessee, where Elijah was born.  Edmond then appears on the Lamar County, Alabama Censuses through 1870.  The censuses list his occupation as blacksmith/wheel right.  He was granted land patents in 1852 and 1857 in the Crews area near Sulligent, Alabama.  An Edmond Mason is credited as being a founding member of Mulberry Church.  This could be the same person, as the church is near where he patented land.

Edmond and Elizabeth had the following children:

Elijah

Born 1821

James

born 1833

?Phillip Coats

Edmond and Elizabeth along with their children are listed in the 1850 Alabama Marion County Beat 4 Census.  There is also listed a “Philip Coats” but it’s unknown who this person is.  Their son, Elijah, was living with his family nearby as listed on page 9.

The 1860 Alabama Marion County Western District  Census Page 68 has Edmond and Elizabeth living alone, next door to Elijah and family.

On the 1870 Alabama Sanford County Township13 Range 15 Page 10 Census, Edmond and Elizabeth are living very near the family of their son James’ wife, Elizabeth (Robertson).

Elizabeth died sometime in 1871.  Edmond then married Martha Ann Robertson on October 27, 1871 in a ceremony performed by Minister A J Egger.  Martha was a sister of Elizabeth Robertson who married Edmond’s son by his first wife, James.  Edmond died April 15, 1873.  Martha received a War of 1812 Widow’s pension, certificate 29011, in April 1880 and received $8.00 a month.  Martha Ann Mason died June 1, 1900.

Elijah Mason, a son of Edmond and Elizabeth Mason, married Margaret, whose last name is unknown, in 1844.  She is listed in one census as being born in Alabama and in another as born in Georgia.  Elijah acquired land patents in 1857 and 1859 for land southwest of Sulligent, Alabama around where Sulligent Lake is today.
